Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
Where can you find glitter, feathers, diamonds, music, plus off-the-charts coolness and the world’s hottest bods all in one place? Only at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, otherwise known as the “sexiest night of the year.” This extravagant happening showcases the latest trends in lingerie fashion, and in just over two decades, it has become the most highly-anticipated date in the catwalk calendar… by men and women alike!
The show began as an intimate gathering held in a single room of New York’s Plaza Hotel. But by 2001 it was being broadcast on live television, and today it boasts a larger international audience than nearly any other fashion event on the planet. This year, the catwalk was set up in Paris, and for the first time Mexico and Latin America got to enjoy the uber-glamorous event on TV.
I had the honor of hosting the program which aired exclusively on Mexican TV, and let me tell you… it was absolutely thrilling! All the hours spent preparing were well worth it, as the adrenaline from the runway seemed to travel through the screens and into our studio in Mexico City, and all of us felt as though we were right there in the first row!
If you’re going to be a fashion critic, you need to be impeccably fashionable, right? So the first challenge was having my make-up and wardrobe be perfectly in tune with the show, and I ended up choosing a fun little dress with silver and gold sequins to go with a natural make-up look, which I thought was perfectly suited for this kind of evening. Considering the nature of the event, I figured I had to show some skin myself, so I displayed a little more leg than I normally would… 😉
One thing you may not realize about hosting this kind of program is the amount of preparation that goes into it: I needed to study and memorize loads and loads of information, just so I’d be able to talk about the thousands of details that make the VSFS such a unique and special event.
As you might expect from one of the biggest fashion shows of the year, there was no shortage of surprises. Can you imagine the face of Bella Hadid as she walks out for the first time and runs into The Weeknd, whom she just broke up with a few month earlier? Just one word: awkward! As if strutting your stuff in front of millions of viewers wasn’t nerve-wracking enough, why not add a heavy dose of the “Ex” factor? Thankfully for the poor girl, she had plenty of support, with her parents Yolanda and Mohamed Hadid watching her from the first row. And then there was her sister Gigi, another of the evening’s biggest stars… what a stunning pair of siblings!
But the biggest surprise of all was provided by the lovely Irina Shayk, who confirmed the swirling pregnancy rumors by flaunting her baby bump in both her runway appearances. Unlike most of the other models, Bradley Cooper’s gorgeous girlfriend came out barely covering her abdomen, and a commotion ensued. And then Lady Gaga… what a voice! Without a doubt, her performance of Million Reasons will be something that will live in the memory of those in attendance.
The icing on the cake was when Bruno Mars walked onto the runway to perform his latest hit 24k. And just as he was saying the words “so many pretty girls around me,” exotic beauty Jasmine Tookes walked out wearing the mesmerizing Fantasy Bra, a piece of lingerie worth 3 million dollars! Might want to wait for the New Year’s sales on that one… The parade ended with a final walk performed by all 51 beautiful models, including the 18 first-timers as well as 16-year veterans and global icons Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima.
In the end everything turned out great, both the show itself and our broadcast, and once again I was reminded of how much I love my job! Because of the program’s success, and thanks to your unfailing support, you will definitely be seeing more exciting events like this one in the coming months, and of course, I look forward to spending next Christmas Eve together with you, as we enjoy the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2017.
