Make-A-Wish Mexico, the Foundation that Makes Dreams Come True
Is there anything more beautiful than a child’s smile? I don’t think so, which is why I felt honored and blessed when Make-A-Wish Mexico, whom I worked with in the past, asked me to host its annual charity event. If you’re not familiar with the organization, let me give you a brief explanation. Make-A-Wish is an international foundation with chapters in 50 countries around the world, centered around one very special mission: to grant the wishes of children and teenagers who suffer from life-threatening conditions.
Children with serious illnesses spend much of their lives in and out of hospitals, and end up losing their right to a joyful and carefree childhood. Their connection to the outside world tends to break down, and they frequently fall victim to depression. Having a seemingly unattainable wish granted helps them understand that everything is possible, it gives them renewed strength and hope, and triggers a positive domino effect which in some cases has even led to a cure or recovery. Over the years, Make-A-Wish Mexico and its namesakes around the globe have given children the gift of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, such as meeting their sports or musical idols, visiting a foreign country, and spending a few days doing their dream job.
The magical “Wish Night” of the Make-A-Wish Mexico foundation
As you might imagine, making all of this happen requires the tireless efforts of volunteers and generous donations by the foundation’s many supporters. To this end, every year before Christmas, Make-a-Wish Mexico organizes a fund-raising event fittingly called the “Noche de los Deseos,” or “Wish Night.” Being able to host this year’s edition was truly a privilege for me, and at the end of the night I was filled with a sense of true pride and gratification. Because – and if you’ve ever helped someone else, you already know this – giving is so much better than receiving. For the occasion, I shared the stage with TV actor and good friend Ernesto Laguardia. The audience, which included important figures from the worlds of fashion, sports and business, gathered in the wonderful setting of the St. Regis Hotel in Mexico City, which was all decked-out in its full holiday garb! There was even a wonderful array of Christmas trees, each one sponsored by one of the partner companies which helped make the wishes come true.
For this very special event, I chose a relatively simple look which, given the season, could be no other color than red! It was a long, low-cut velvet dress (one of my favorite trends for this winter, by the way) by Hilda Calderon enhanced by a sparkling necklace. The shoes, by Varsavia Viamara, are actually something I bought a few years ago. But they are so unbelievably comfortable, they’ve become one of my favorite pairs. And on an evening like this one, where I needed to be standing for over 2 hours, they were simply perfect!
Here we are speaking with one of the young guests: so much energy in this little lady!
Without a doubt, the most exciting moment of the night was when we welcomed onto the stage some of the children whose wishes had been granted. Seeing the joy in their faces was literally priceless, and a powerful reminder of how much these brave little heroes can teach us. Maybe next time, we can think twice before complaining about something trivial at work, or being upset because the chicken is slightly overcooked…
But the best thing of all is knowing that the foundation’s efforts don’t end when the “Wish Night” does, and that Make-A-Wish Mexico works day after day, all year long, to keep delivering smiles where they most are needed. In fact, if you think you’d like to help us, take a look at the foundation’s website. You’ll realize that even a small contribution can make a big difference. And at a time when we’re all looking for good gift ideas, don’t you think that bringing a little bit of joy into the life of a child would be the greatest Christmas present of all?
